The base is cut from kiln dried redwood.  I have a professional woodworker do the cutting, drilling and routing.  The parts for each base are cut from the same board so that the colors and grain match.  The parts are lettered to avoid mixing parts.

I use pocket screws to connect the frame parts.  A box helps to keep the sides aligned while they are being attached.

Stainless steel rods are fit into the pre-drilled holes in the boards at the back, then threaded into the front board.

Here is the assembled base, after drilling holes for small plastic feet.

The next step is to assemble the "rake", that slides through the side channels and scrapes the underside of the vermicompost into a tray.
