$75,000 on 1/3 acre: Profitable Urban Farm Tour With Green City Acres.

Categories: Green

I heard first about Curtis Stone one evening when my husband and I were searching about ways to make a profit selling greens. We stumbled upon one of his Youtube videos and watched it. He looked young, but after hearing his interview on how he started his farming business, I realized he was very smart, hard working and driven.

Since then I have had the opportunity of not only meeting him in person, but to really have deep conversations about what he calls Profitable Urban Farming. He had his start using other peoples back yards and farming in them, all of this in an urban context. And now after purchasing it, his base of operations is that first house where he planted and harvested his first crop.

The method and system of growing and selling his produce is so dialed up that he has come up with an online course to teach whoever is interested to learn it and apply it for themselves. He is passionate about his work, about sharing his experience and knowledge and about the impact he is making in his small urban community. He has turned his neighbors into friends and allies in this local food and sustainability movement. He's walking the walk.

Curtis is a farmer, author, speaker and consultant. His area of expertise is in quick growing, high value annual vegetables for direct consumer market streams. His book, The Urban Farmer demonstrates organic intensive techniques with a focus on business and systems to streamline labour and production. He offers a new way to think about farming. One where quality of life and profitability coexist.

Curtis’ farm, Green City Acres is located in Kelowna, BC, Canada and was established in 2010. In an eight month growing season, the farm generates over $75,000 per year on only one third of an acre. This is done by specializing in a select group of high value, quick growing crops that allow for multiple plantings in the same beds as well as calculated intercropping strategies. The farm has been recognized internationally, as flag ship example of how profitable and productive urban agriculture can be.

The Urban Farmer is a channel dedicated to sharing the experiences and learnings from Curtis Stone and his urban farm Green City Acres in downtown Kelowna, BC, Canada.
