Norway's Radioactive Reindeer

Categories: Nature

When Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty photographed this testing of the Snasa herd, the highest reading was 2,100 becquerels per kilogram. Norway’s current limit is 3000, far higher than the EU limit of 600 becquerels per kilogram for food.

Much of the radiation that fell on Norway has reached its half-life of 30 years, but gradual decay and the occasional weather shakeup can still contaminate animals for decades to come.
